Feature access for Users, Non-Users, Owners, and Members

In FireHydrant, the number of users is based on the number of incident responders currently in the organization. This can include support teams, subject matter experts, incident commanders, and others.

With that in mind:

  • What's the difference between a FireHydrant user and a non-FireHydrant user?
  • What's the difference between an Owner and a Member?

Any user can declare an incident

All users within your Slack workspace (both non-users and users of FireHydrant) can declare a new incident inside of Slack by running the command:

/fh new

User vs. non-user access

Users who do not have a FireHydrant account can still use FireHydrant with limited options. Specifically:

Non-FireHydrant Users:

  • can declare a new incident in Slack using /fh new
  • can view internal/external status pages

FireHydrant Users:

  • have full access to all Slack bot commands
  • can to “star” events for the starred incident timeline
  • have access to the FireHydrant UI
  • can be pulled into an incident channel automatically based on a PagerDuty, Opsgenie, or VictorOps schedule

Owner vs. Member access

Privileges for users who have accounts in FireHydrant are dictated by their user roles. Users have Owner or Member access. Think of Owners as administrators in your FireHydrant account and Members as collaborators or individual contributors.

  • Owners in FireHydrant can see and access all options in the left nav panel, including spaces where they can configure integrations and set up user accounts.
  • Members have access to a modified left nav panel without sections on Integrations, Organization or StatusPage configuration. 

Commonly-asked questions

  • Can a non-FireHydrant user access the retrospective?
    A non-FireHydrant user can only access a retrospective after the PDF is published and exported. The options to read and write into a retrospective before completion also requires being a FireHydrant user.

  • Can a non-FireHydrant user “star” events to be included in the starred incident timeline?
    This option is not currently available for non-FH users.

  • Can a non-FireHydrant user’s chat messages on Slack still be recorded within the incident timeline?
    Yes. Non-FireHydrant users are still able to join the channel and have their messages recorded within the incident timeline.

  • Can a non-FireHydrant user be assigned action-items?
    No. You must be a FireHydrant user in order to be assigned an action item.

  • Can a non-FireHydrant user view the status page?
    Yes. You do not need to be a licensed user on FireHydrant in order to view a status page.
